Zara Worth & Swipe-Specific Art

Zara Worth (b. 1990 North Yorkshire, UK) is an artist, writer and doctoral researcher based between Leeds and Gateshead, UK. Her practice uses current food and lifestyle trends to investigate the cultures and economies of Web2.0, and the neoliberal condition through hybrid methodologies spanning performance, drawing, new media, painting and object-making. Since receiving a PhD Studentship from Leeds Beckett University in 2016, her practice-led research has focused on exploring how Instagram might be used as a site, strategy and subject for post-internet art practice, under the title: The Artist Presents: Hybrid Practice for the 'always-on' generation. How might Instagram be used as a site for art?...

Zara Worth explores Instagram as a site-specific meta-space to culture hack #language as well as present projects to a constantly refreshing pool of viewers. Worth’s project ‘A drawing made by cutting up my body weight in celery’ (2016- present) is exactly how it sounds, and can be found @zara_worth. The Instagram account features over 700 video posts documenting the project one celery stalk at a time. The platform allows Worth to effectively express the immensity of the project without subjecting the viewer to watching the entirety of the performance drawing; exploiting and subverting typical time-kill user engagement with the platform.

Worth is amongst a handful of contemporary artists and creative Instagram users utilizing Instagram as more than just a free digital portfolio. Instagram based artists such as @helpearthrover take advantage of the anonymity of the app to create fictions that viewers may periodically tune into. @helpearthrover takes this fiction a step further by providing viewers with the task of participation in response to the question posed by the fallen rover.

Despite its seeming democratization of outreach and access, Instagram maintains a level of exclusiveness, and capitalistizes on FOMO. @*****whereareyou share just two posts notifying followers about an event on the second Tuesday of each month. The first post notifies followers that the next day a event will be happening. The second post produces a point of contact (ie: Phone, #, or email). Neither post describe the event or set-up an expectation for the attendance, location, duration - really and truly you just don’t what it is...but you want to! The impetus is on the viewer to make the discovery: turning an online profile into an intriguing IRL adventure.

Instagram’s continually evolving usage and cultures offer contemporary artists a fruitful meta-medium yet to be exhausted.
